I don’t know what you think, but creating and completing your own woodworking projects can be richly rewarding in terms of the satisfaction and pleasure it gives. And, you can save yourself some money as well.

Just standing there admiring your own handiwork and a job well done, there’s nothing like it. However, my journey to actually building my own shed and the various other woodworking projects I have done since, has given me a few headaches along the way.

As a fellow woodworker, you probably know what I mean. You think you have everything laid out and are ready to go when you hit a snag and you find out you have bought the wrong materials, or worse, your measurements are out. Even if they are only out by a small amount, the effects are the same, and you have to go back to the merchant with the right ones.

Then there’s all the safety equipment and tools you need. I really had no ideal there was so much involved in building a storage shed when I first started my project. While it is true there are many things to think about, the most important item which has helped me successfully complete my own DIY projects has been a good set of step by step shed building plans and shed blueprints to follow.

Even though I knew, roughly, the design I wanted for my storage shed, I still had to get it down on paper. Now, I am not very good at drawing shed building plans, even though a few friends said there was nothing to it. I disagree. Heights, measurements and scales aren’t part of my everyday conversation, so I was lucky when I hit on these detailed set of shed  blueprints which guided me through the job and saved me time and expense as well.

Building A Storage Shed – Where To Begin

Building a storage shed should be fun and enjoyable. Not just for you, but for the family as well. With the right set of shed building plans the whole thing can be a breeze. As for myself, I am not an expert woodworker but I can follow a set of step by step instructions for putting something together.

The thought processes I went through when I wanted to build a storage shed were as follows. I first thought about where I wanted the construction to be sited on my property. Then I needed to know how big it was going to be, so I thought about what I wanted to store in the shed. Then my thoughts shifted to design, such as what windows and doors I wanted.

I could have bought a ready made storage shed, but I didn’t like the designs very much. And the sizes didn’t suit me either. At least with a custom built shed you can build it to the size you want. But, don’t lose sight of the right shed plans to see it through successfully.

Without those it could easily end prematurely in frustration and you could be left with an incomplete building on your hands which you would have to finish as best you could, or employ someone to finish it for you. I dreaded that happening to me, but I thought there is not too much wrong you can do with building a shed, the ones I have seen all look a basic design.

You need to mark out an area where you want the storage shed to be, and ensure the base is flat with good drainage, and allow for good air circulation all round to prevent wood rot in the future.

Obviously there is more to building a shed than there is space for here, but this article gives an outline of what is involved if you have never thought about building a storage shed before.

I was interested in building a wood storage shed a while back, when I had a look round my property and thought the wooden storage shed I already have was well past its sell by date. In other words, it was starting to rot at the base, and had bits of moss growing on the sides. So I thought it was time to look for a new outdoor storage shed.

Luckily, there are a few options to choose from when looking to either build a storage shed from scratch, or buy a ready built replacement. If you go that route, you will find you have to look for a best fit for your personal situation. If you are happy with a compromise, and if the price is right for you, then that would be your best choice.

If you decide you want to build a wooden storage shed from scratch, and think you have the necessary woodworking skills, then why not have a go? Obviously there is a lot more thought and preparation to the project if you decide to build the shed yourself. So time is going to be a factor, and you will need to make a lot of choices, such as location, size of the shed, choice of materials you will need, tools, and possible foundations.

On top of all this you will need to factor in the cost of the materials, and your own time as well. If you can coax some of your friends to help you, that would make the project a bit easier, and more fun. Building a wood storage shed from scratch need not be so daunting as you might imagine, if you have a good set of step by step blueprints to walk you through the build. You can search the Internet for some, and there are free storage sheds plans to be had as well.
